June 2009 e-Newsletter

In this issue:

Welcome to the June newsletter from the Pilbara Health team

In this issue, we invited frontrunners in the Be Active challenge to share their fitness secrets and talk about why exercise is important to them. We also found out how our top teams shaped up at the halfway mark of the national challenge.

Staying motivated midway through a 10-week challenge can be tough, especially for first-timers, so if you know someone taking part give them a well-earned pat on the back.

This month, we also announce the first winners of our Be Active random draw.  The names of Western Australian participants averaging 10,000 steps a day were entered into the draw and two winners every fortnight will be randomly selected.

If the Be Active challenge has helped to revitalise your daily exercise routine, maybe it’s time to line up for the next challenge - Perth’s City to Surf.

Employees and their families who participate in this year’s City to Surf charity event will be supported with registration costs and t-shirts. The event includes a 4 kilometre or 12 kilometre  walk or run and half or full marathon, so check what you’re doing on Sunday, August 30.

More information about sponsorship will be forwarded shortly and in the meantime, go to www.citytosurf.activ.asn.au for competition details.

See you there!

Be Active challengers share training secrets

When it comes to exercising regularly, is it true that sporty people naturally stay on track or is it more a case of mind over matter? At the halfway stage of the Be Active challenge, we asked two WA team leaders to set the record straight.

Operations planner Kirsty Liddicoat is wise beyond her years about the benefits of daily exercise. Leading an active life is so much a part of Kirsty’s routine that she recently backpacked around Argentina with partner Guy Brasell, a production engineer who also works at West Angelas.

The couple arrived in Patagonia for a three-week trek through national parks and icy glaciers, which ended in Buenos Aires before a return flight to the dusty red desert of the Pilbara. Read more

Heading up the Be Active ladder for WA at the halfway point for regular entrants was Yandi RTP, the team from Yandicoogina led by warehouse administrator Agata Piwowarek.

Five weeks into the challenge, Yandi RTP ranked 11th in the national ladder, had completed 2,568,407 steps and had arrived at Adelaide.

Slam dunk for Brockman!

A new era of fast and furious fitness has taken hold in Brockman, in the shape and form of basketball, writes onsite health solutions exercise physiologist Georgina Hammans.

Georgina teamed up with Indigenous liaison officer Derek Kickett to organise a team from Brockman for a round robin basketball tournament hosted by Tom Price, in celebration of NAIDOC week earlier this month.

The “Brockman 2 Win” players met the challenge with open arms, supported by the Brockman management team, who enabled time off for training and travel.

Georgina said, “They may not have won the tournament, they may not have won a single game, but Brockman 2 Win oozed team spirit, dedication and courage. Above all else, they triumphed for the simple reason that they are achieving health and wellbeing through physical activity.”

She praised the team for incorporating the three E’s of exercise - entertainment, energy and enthusiasm – and she urged other employees to take up regular exercise.

“There are 1,440 minutes in every day and you only need to exercise for 30 of them, so why not find a sport or exercise that interests you and kick start your healthy living lifestyle today?”
